When Jean Grey (manipulated by Mastermind) loses control, she becomes a world-destroyer. Visually, the costume turns crimson red, and the firebird becomes larger and more menacing.

John Byrne's art in the Dark Phoenix Saga is legendary. The moment she eats a sun, killing billions, changed comics forever (heroes weren't supposed to do that). Collectors prize pages showing her battle with the X-Men on the moon.

She is eventually stopped by the sacrifice of Jean Grey. It is the ultimate tragedy of the X-Men.
