Description
“just another inconvenience”
In this piece, Druuna —the iconic character created by Paolo Eleuteri Serpieri— is reinterpreted by Ángel Bazal in a scene that blends sensuality, unease, and an almost insulting calm in the face of danger.
The composition is deceptively simple yet highly effective: Druuna sits nude and serene, surrounded by tentacles emerging from the water like physical manifestations of dark thoughts. Yet instead of fear, her expression suggests boredom… as if she’s seen worse and this is just another mildly inconvenient day. That contrast is where the illustration truly comes alive.
Technically, the use of diluted ink creates a damp, dense, organic atmosphere that perfectly enhances the viscous environment. Smooth grayscale transitions provide volume and depth, while the black ballpoint pen sharply defines contours and intricate details—especially in the tentacles, whose textures feel almost tangible. Druuna’s skin, by contrast, is rendered with softness and care, creating a powerful tactile contrast between the human and the monstrous.
From an artistic critique standpoint, the absence of color becomes a strength. Bazal focuses entirely on tonal values, intensifying the visual narrative. The world feels drained of life… except for the protagonist, who still radiates presence even in grayscale. This reinforces a sense of isolation and vulnerability—though she doesn’t seem particularly concerned.
And here comes the provocative twist: Druuna isn’t in danger… the danger is clearly wasting its time trying to impress her. The piece plays with eroticism and the grotesque, but also with subtle humor—because when you’re surrounded by tentacles and your face says “meh,” you know you’re the one in control.
