Tell us about yourself and what got you interested in drawing

I’m Maria Laura Sanapo, an Italian comic artist and illustrator. I drew before I could even read, and what truly pushed me toward comics was the art of telling stories through powerful images—guiding the reader by the hand, panel after panel, and letting visuals carry the emotion of the narrative.

Who were some of your early inspirations?

My inspirations include Marco Santucci, Dave Stevens, Neil Adams, Alan Davis, David Finch, José Luis García-López, Brian Bolland, Arthur Adams, Ivan Reis, Nicola Scott and Bryan Hitch.

What are some of your favorite projects you’ve worked on?

I’ve loved working with DC Comics, Dynamite, Zenescope, Archie Comics, Titan Comics, and more. Some highlights include DC Bombshells, Wonder Woman, Batwoman, Catwoman, Green Lantern, Vampirella, Red Sonja, Betty and Veronica.

Favorite character(s) to draw?

I’ve been lucky to draw characters I genuinely love across different publishers and projects. I have a soft spot for bold, iconic figures—Wonder Woman and the Joker are two favorites, and getting to draw them for DC has been a real honor I’m grateful for.

But what excites me most is strong, character-driven storytelling, wherever it lives: I love magic and theatricality (Zatanna), and I’m obsessed with drawing complex, dangerous charm (Poison Ivy). I also have a lot of fun with high-energy superheroes like Spider-Man—and with lighter, character-driven worlds: Betty and Veronica are an absolute joy to draw.

Across genres, I’m especially drawn to outsiders—characters on the margins with unconventional strength and a story that doesn’t fit the usual mold.

What are you currently working on?

Right now I’m working on new comic and illustration projects, while also creating fresh original pieces and commissions for collectors.
