Welcome to Our Newest Edition of Creator Spotlight!

Our recurring feature that shines a light on comic creators selling original art on the Raremarq marketplace, offering fans an inside look at their journeys and contributions to the industry.

This week, we’re switching things up a bit. As you may have seen, we recently beta launched our brand-new Shopify app, Auction Now and we’re beyond excited to announce that this week’s spotlight artist is the very first to use it to auction his original art directly on his own site!

Today we’re thrilled to feature the one and only Skottie Young, a fan-favorite comic book writer and artist celebrated for his distinctive style and incredible body of work. Over the past two decades, Skottie has become one of the most recognizable names in comics, producing countless highly collectible covers for publishers like Marvel, DC, and Image Comics. He’s also the creative force behind beloved original series such as I Hate Fairyland, Middlewest, and Strange Academy.

We’re honored to be working with Skottie and the Stupid Fresh Mess team to make this happen, giving fans the chance to bid on his original art directly from him.

So without further ado, let’s hear from the man himself. And don’t forget to check out his very first live auction powered by Auction Now, now running at skottieyoung.com.

Who were some of your early inspirations?

I was a big Mad Magazine fan when I was a kid so cartoonists like Jack Davis and Sergio Aragones really connected with me. I loved comics strips as well and Bill Watterson, Charles Schulz and Jim Davis were huge for me. As I got older and into comics in the 90’s I was really dug Sam Keith, Todd Mcfarlane, Greg Capullo, Chris Bachalo, Humberto Ramos and others. I just love expressive cartoonists.

What are some of your favorite projects you’ve worked on?

I Hate Fairyland is my favorite book I’ve written and drawn. And then I’d probably say Middlewest is my favorite book where I was just the writer. I co-created with amazing artist Jorge Corona.

Favorite character(s) to draw?

Gert from I Hate Fairyland is super fun. And I love doing different takes on the Batman Rouges Gallery. I grew up watching Batman: The Animated Series and just love those villains.

What are you currently working on?

Too much. Hahaha. I’m still writing I Hate Fairyland, one or two covers a week, and finally chipping away at a new book that I’m writing and drawing called Boy At The End. And maybe a few other things I can’t really talk about yet, but soooooon!
