Welcome to Our Newest Edition of Creator Spotlight!

Our recurring feature that shines a light on comic creators selling original art on the Raremarq marketplace, offering fans an inside look at their journeys and contributions to the industry.

Today, we’re thrilled to shine a spotlight on the Eisner nominated comic artist, Steve Epting!

With a career stretching back to First Comics, Epting made his name with Marvel fans everywhere with an eminent fifty issue run drawingThe Avengersin the 1990’s. He also contributed art for X-Factor and the X-Men, as well as Superman and Aquaman at DC Comics. Epting branched out on various Crossgen titles, including co-creating the Eisner nominated pirate saga El Cazador.

Epting returned to Marvel to begin an award winning collaboration with Ed Brubaker on Captain America and The Marvels Project. He then teamed with Jonathan Hickman for a defining run on Fantastic Four, followed by New Avengers.

Epting along with Brubaker co-created the Winter Soldier, the main character from the smash hit movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Epting later re-teamed with Brubaker on the smash hit Velvet for Image Comics, and provided the art for the relaunch of Batwoman for DC Comics. He recently co-created Telepaths with J. Michael Straczynski for AWA, as well as the graphic novels Sara and Partisan with Garth Ennis for TKO.

Tell us about yourself and what got you interested in drawing

I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember, so I’m not sure what the initial spark was. I remember drawing different characters from the Sunday newspaper comics and whatever comic books my parents would buy for me and my brother. I also loved studying album cover art in the 70s.

Who were some of your early inspirations?

My earliest influences were from bronze age Marvel comics - Romita, Buscema, Colan, Kirby etc.. as well as Frazetta’s art books, which completely blew my mind. As a kid that’s the stuff that really made me want to draw. From there my influences expanded exponentially in all directions.

What are some of your favorite projects you’ve worked on?

I loved working on Velvet, a cold war espionage series with Ed Brubaker, and two World War II graphic novels with Garth Ennis: Sara and Partisan. Those three series are not only the ones I enjoyed most, but they are also the projects I’m most proud of. Probably some correlation there.

Favorite character(s) to draw?

The first character I tried over and over to get “right” was Spider-Man. To this day he’s still pops up randomly when I’m randomly sketching while on the phone. I could probably draw him with my eyes closed.

What are you currently working on?

I have a new project that will be coming through Image Comics this summer. There will be a lot of news about it soon!

What inspired you to start using Raremarq, and what pieces will you be auctioning?

I love the idea of a marketplace that was created specifically for artists, collectors, and original art fans. I’ll be auctioning sketches and sketch covers initially, and possibly original pages coming down the line. I’m excited to join the community and get started.
