The Princess of Mars. Dejah Thoris is one of the earliest heroines in pulp fiction, created by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Visually, she is defined by her red skin and ornate, often minimal, Martian jewelry. She is a warrior scientist, not a damsel in distress. Artists like J.
