Tars Tarkas Original Art

Tars Tarkas is the Jeddak (king) of the Tharks, the four-armed green giants of Mars. He is John Carter's fiercest ally and best friend. His design—tall, tusks, four arms, green skin—is a challenge and delight for artists.

Unlike most Tharks who are cruel, Tars Tarkas knows love and friendship. Combat scenes featuring him are a flurry of blades, as he can wield four weapons at once. He represents the "noble savage" trope elevated to alien royalty. Pages showing the bond between the human Carter and the alien Tarkas are central to the Barsoom mythos.
