The ectoplasmic man. Johann Kraus is a German medium whose body was destroyed during a séance, leaving him as a spirit confined to a containment suit. Visually, he is a "bubble-head" diver suit, which allows artists to express his emotions through body language and the swirling smoke inside his helmet. Guy Davis excelled at drawing the transparency of his spirit form.
He leads the BPRD field team after Hellboy leaves. His ability to possess the dead or manipulate machinery adds a unique tactical element to the comics. Art featuring him often shows the suit being breached, with ectoplasm leaking out.
He often clashes with the more military-minded Ben Daimio. His tragic backstory—losing his body to save others—fits the gothic tone of the universe.
