Kurt Wagner is the swashbuckling heart of the X-Men. Nightcrawler looks like a demon—blue fur, tail, three fingers—but is a devout Catholic and a joyful hero. Visually, his teleportation "BAMF" effect is one of the coolest things in comics, leaving a cloud of purple smoke. Dave Cockrum designed his unique look.

Artists love drawing his acrobatic poses, using his tail to hold swords or hang from rafters. Alan Davis (Excalibur) is considered the definitive Nightcrawler artist, capturing his charm and agility. He represents the theme of "don't judge a book by its cover."

He is the son of Mystique and the demon Azazel. He is best friends with Wolverine and often partners with Kitty Pryde.
