Charles Xavier is the founder of the X-Men and the most powerful telepath on Earth. Professor X dreams of a world where humans and mutants live in peace. Visually, his bald head and hoverchair (or wheelchair) are iconic. He is the Martin Luther King Jr. to Magneto's Malcolm X.

Art featuring Xavier is often cerebral, showing "astral plane" battles or him using Cerebro. Jim Lee and Frank Quitely have drawn memorable versions. He is a morally gray characters, often manipulating his students for the greater good.

His relationship with Magneto is the central conflict of the series. He is the father of Legion. He has a romance with Empress Lilandra of the Shi'ar.
