The Lethal Protector. Venom is the dark reflection of Spider-Man, formed when the alien symbiote bonded with Eddie Brock. Visually, Venom is a monster—huge muscles, a gaping maw of razor-sharp teeth, and a long, prehensile tongue. Artists love drawing him because the symbiote is fluid, allowing for exaggerated anatomy and tendrils that fill the negative space of a page.

Created by Todd McFarlane, Venom's look defined the "edgy" 90s. Mark Bagley and Ryan Stegman (King in Black) have also delivered definitive runs. Collectors seek pages with the "grin" and the tongue lashing out. The contrast between the black suit and the white spider-symbol is perfect for black and white original art.

He is inextricably linked to Spider-Man, shifting from arch-nemesis to uneasy ally. His "offspring," Carnage, provides a villain even worse than himself, leading to team-ups. The recent King in Black storyline involving Knull has elevated Venom to cosmic importance.
