Stanley Ipkiss Original Art

Stanley Ipkiss is the original wearer of The Mask. Unlike the Jim Carrey movie, the original comic by John Arcudi and Doug Mahnke is a violent, dark revenge fantasy. Stanley is not a nice guy; he is a loser who uses the mask to murder those who wronged him. The art reflects this gritty, urban horror tone.

Mahnke's art is visceral. Stanley looks weak and disheveled, contrasting with the indestructible, green-headed monster he becomes. Collectors prize the original Dark Horse mini-series pages for their uncompromising violence and dark humor.

He is hunted by Lieutenant Kellaway. He is eventually killed by his girlfriend Kathy, showing that the Mask is the true protagonist, not Stanley.
