The Rocketeer Original Art - Page 11

Dave Stevens' retro-futurist masterpiece. The Rocketeer is a love letter to the pulp serials of the 1930s. The Art Deco helmet, the leather jacket, and the jetpack create one of the most perfect silhouettes in comic history. Because Dave Stevens produced relatively little comic work before his passing, original Rocketeer pages are incredibly rare and expensive—true "Grails" of the hobby.

Stevens' art is known for its immaculate brushwork and pin-up influence. Since his death, other artists have contributed to anthologies, but the Stevens originals remain the peak. Collectors look for pages that feature the flying mechanics or the glamorous 1930s Los Angeles setting.

The story is small and personal. Cliff Secord's girlfriend, Betty (modeled famously after Bettie Page), is a co-star in the art, and pages featuring her are just as valuable as action shots. The Rocketeer's world is self-contained, but the vibe fits perfectly with other pulp heroes.
